EDGAR is the SEC's database of filings by public companies, funds and insiders. You can look a company up by name, ticker or CIK, browse its filings by type, see the latest filings as they are posted, or use full-text search to find a phrase across every electronic filing since 2001. That makes it easy to see which companies mention a supplier, a covenant term or a new risk factor. Developers can pull the same data through the EDGAR APIs.
The SEC also publishes beginner material that is worth a junior analyst's afternoon. How to Read a 10-K walks through the required sections of the annual report, from the business description and risk factors to MD&A and the financial statements. The Beginners' Guide to Financial Statements covers balance sheets, income statements, cash flow statements, the footnotes and the basic ratios.
Make reading the filing your first step on any company, and always read the footnotes and MD&A, not just the press release.
