Dalio made this animated video in 2013 to explain his template for the economy in half an hour. He breaks the economy into transactions, separates productivity growth from the short-term debt cycle and the long-term debt cycle, and walks through how deleveragings unfold and the four levers policymakers can pull: spending cuts, debt restructuring, wealth redistribution and money printing.
The value is in the simplicity. Credit, interest rates and the gap between income and spending become intuitive, and the video sets up later Dalio material on big debt crises and the changing world order. Many finance teachers and trading desks use it as an orientation for new hires.
Watch it once straight through, then again while pausing on the debt-cycle sections. The landing page sits on Dalio's own Economic Principles site, which also links his longer papers and offers free PDFs of some of his books in exchange for an email sign-up.
